GREENSBURG, PA, Friday, March 10, 2017 – Over the past two weeks, Pittsburgh artist Scott Hunter has created a large scale mural in The Westmoreland Museum of American Art’s Robertshaw Gallery, located on the first floor of the Museum just off the entrance lobby. Mr. Hunter has been interacting with visitors throughout the process of painting the mural. The work is entitled Authorized Personnel Only, and in his words, “The piece itself is a reflection on our private lives and the outside forces that seek to infiltrate.” Further he stated, “We worry for our privacy, our source of information and the consequences of our actions. The arrangement of interiors [depicted in the work], populated with familiar figures show an interconnectedness that may discomfort the viewer while appealing to a certain sense of humor.”

Mr. Hunter expressed that, “It has been my honor to have been selected to create a mural sized painting in the Robertshaw Gallery at The Westmoreland Museum of American Art. I am especially happy to have the opportunity to create a work of art on such a large scale. My recent work has relied on an increase in scale and the challenges associated with composing images upon an expansive canvas has allowed more flexibility in choice and narrative. Allowing museum visitors access to the process of creating this sizable composition has also sharpened my ability to solve problems directly related to the selection and placement of images necessary to elicit an emotional response and a correlation to current world events.”

The floor-to-ceiling work will remain on view through Sunday, June 4 and is the first of an ongoing initiative planned by the Museum called “Artist in Action,” which aims to demystify the work of an artist and to create engaging experiences for visitors. Mr. Hunter will continue to work on the mural today during the Museum’s regular hours of 11am-5pm and will be on hand at tonight’s Art on Tap event from 5-7pm as well.
