Breaking Ground: Landscape and Labor in Southwestern Pennsylvania

Breaking Ground: Landscape and Labor in Southwestern Pennsylvania is a reinstallation of The Westmoreland’s permanent collection that explores the profound impact of landscape and local industry on the collective identity of Southwestern Pennsylvania. In addition to presenting beloved highlights from the collection, this gallery includes two smaller, rotating presentations that delve into specific themes. Breaking Ground is not created from a singular voice but weaves institutional expertise with community perspectives to create an exhibition that is—and will continue to be—reflective of and responsive to our past, present, and future.

Support for the reinstallation of the permanent collection galleries is made possible by the Terra Foundation for American Art.
