Collage

This quilt was made in 1852 and features a design often called “Whig Rose.” If you’ve ever made a quilt before or know someone who does, then you know they require a lot of time and knowledge to complete. Quilts at this time were usually completed by many women working together. We wanted to share it with you as inspiration for your collage because in many ways quilts a like large fabric collages. When making a quilt you must first cut out your fabric in specific shapes and re-sew everything back together. The fabrics that would have been used in the 1850s were probably scraps from old clothing, they really knew how to reuse and recycle materials to create cozy and beautiful blankets. Quilt are just like your paper collage except you’ll probably display your artwork on a wall instead of your bed!
