GREENSBURG, PA, Monday, May 2, 2016 – The Westmoreland Museum of American Art announces that Mother and Two Children, c. 1905 by Mary Cassatt will travel to Japan to be included in Mary Cassatt Retrospective organized by the Yokohama Museum of Art. The exhibition will be Japan’s first large-scale retrospective of the artist’s work in thirty-five years. The painting will be on view in Yokohama from June 25 to September 11, 2016 before traveling to The National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto where the exhibition will continue from September 27 to December 4, 2016. Comprised of approximately eighty works, the exhibition will span Cassatt’s career while contextualizing her work with that of her contemporaries, including Edgar Degas and Berthe Morisot, as well as her Japanese influences, most notably Ukiyo-e prints. Originally hailing from Allegheny City (now the Northside of Pittsburgh), Cassatt lived most of her life in Europe associating with the French impressionists, especially her close friend Edgar Degas.
Fans of the painting, which is one of the most beloved in the Museum’s collection, are able to tag along on its journey by following The Westmoreland on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Also, one may stop by The Westmoreland Museum Shop before Tuesday, May 31 to purchase a postcard of Mother and Two Children in order to receive a personalized greeting from “Mary” postmarked from Japan. Mother and Two Children will remain on view at The Westmoreland through May 31.
About The Westmoreland Museum of American Art
The Westmoreland Museum of American Art, located at 221 N. Main Street in Greensburg, PA, recently completed a transformational renovation and expansion project, hosting a community grand reopening celebration in late October of 2015. A new LEED-certified addition adds over 13,000 square feet to the Museum and features a dynamic cantilevered design along with a stunning view of the City of Greensburg and the Laurel Highlands beyond. The Westmoreland’s permanent collection is comprised of works by major American artists from the 18th century through the present, with a special emphasis on Southwestern Pennsylvania art and artists. The Museum also offers an impressive schedule of temporary exhibitions of American art – both nationally-travelling and those organized in house.
