Family-friendly Event to Celebrate the Legacy of MLK Jr.

Monday, January 19
10am–3pm

Join The Westmoreland Museum of American Art for a special day of programming celebrating the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through reflection, creativity, and community connection. Guests will experience powerful performances honoring Dr. King’s vision and impact, including a unity candle-lighting ceremony, an interactive drum circle with the Ibeji Drum Ensemble, and a musical tribute by Rodman Street Missionary Baptist Church. Visitors can also explore community tables hosted by local organizations and participate in a variety of engaging, all-ages art-making activities.

This year’s celebration also features a poster contest showcasing artwork by fifth-grade students from Roy A. Hunt Elementary School in New Kensington, along with a final opportunity to explore the Winter Tales immersive experience.

  • Enjoy delicious food options for purchase from the historic Sankofa Mansion located in New Kensington.
Community Partner Tables
  • Meet local and regional community partners and learn about the resources they offer.
Dream in Silhouette Art Activity
  • This educational art activity is inspired by Moses Williams, who was born into slavery around 1777 in Philadelphia and became a noted silhouette artist. Participants of all ages will create their own silhouette portraits, filling them with drawings or words that reflect their personal dreams and inspirations.
Artistic Martin Luther King Jr. Poster Tribute
  • Visit the Studio Gallery to view a poster contest featuring artwork by fifth-grade students from Roy A. Hunt Elementary School in New Kensington.
Winter Tales: An Immersive Experience
  • Step into the season of snow in Winter Tales, where art comes to life through immersive snowy landscapes inspired by Greensburg, Pittsburgh, and beyond.
Community Creativity & Conversation Stations 
  • NAACP Station: Families are invited to get creative with hands-on art activities inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s message of hope and kindness. Enjoy writing prompts, word searches, coloring pages, and learn more about the NAACP’s work in our community.
  • YWCA Station: Stop by for a welcoming, family-friendly conversation led by YWCA Greater Pittsburgh. Through gentle discussion and reflection, families will explore ideas of fairness, kindness, and how we can all take small steps to help build a more just world.
SCHEDULED ACTIVITIES

10:30–11:15am – Unity Candle Lighting Ceremony (Paul and Carol Evanson Community Room)
Join us for a candle-lighting ceremony honoring Dr. King’s profound civil rights journey and his unwavering dedication to education, the arts, community engagement, and fellowship.

11am–1pm – Children’s Storytime (Historical Gallery, 2nd Floor)
Discover the life and legacy of Dr. King through storytelling for all ages, presented by the Black Student Union at Seton Hill University.

11:30am–12pm – Musical Performance by the Rodman Street Missionary Baptist Church (Paul and Carol Evanson Community Room)
Join us for an inspiring performance by the Rodman Street Missionary Baptist Church in honor of Dr. King.

12:30–1pm AND 1:30–2pm – Interactive Drum Circle (Paul and Carol Evanson Community Room)
Enjoy an interactive drum circle for all ages with Ibeji Drum Ensemble.
