Sunday Fun Day: Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage

Fun event for the whole family!

Celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage at The Westmoreland with special performances and engaging hands-on activities. Fun for all ages!

Enjoy captivating performances by Tuika’s Polynesian Island Magic and Pittsburgh Xiaobo Waist Drum Dance Group with special guests. Experience Kamishibai, the traditional Japanese art of storytelling, presented by the Greensburg Hempfield Area Library. Take part in engaging hands-on activities, including Chinese calligraphy and art-making, and savor a variety of delicious cultural cuisine.

Ongoing Programs
10am-3pm
  • Chinese Calligraphy Station: Learn the art of Chinese calligraphy and receive a personalized design to take home!
  • Cultural Cuisine: Enjoy delicious food offerings from local vendors celebrating Asian flavors.
  • Art Drop-In: Design a Japanese-inspired fan.
Scheduled Events 
  • 10-11:30am – Haku and Lei Making Demonstrations
    Discover the history and tradition of haku and lei making with live demonstrations. Guests will have a chance to win finished designs through a raffle!
  • 11-11:45am – Kamishibai Theater Story Time & Activity
    Experience Kamishibai, a traditional Japanese form of storytelling, presented in partnership with the Greensburg Hempfield Area Library.
  • 12–12:30pm – Tuika’s Polynesian Island Magic Performance
    Enjoy an exciting performance filled with Polynesian music, dance, and cultural magic.
  • 12–3pm – Explore the World of Ed Young
    Discover the imaginative work of award-winning author and illustrator Ed Young through a selection of his picture books, including Lon Po PoThe House Baba Built, and My Mei Mei. Enjoy a short video of his original book dummy and explore stories inspired by Chinese folklore.
  • 1-1:45pm – Kamishibai Theater Story Time + Activity
    A second chance to enjoy Kamishibai storytelling with the Greensburg Hempfield Area Library.
  • 1-1:30pm – Tuika’s Polynesian Island Magic Performance (Encore)
    Enjoy a repeat performance full of vibrant energy and filled with Polynesian music, dance, and cultural magic.
  • 2-3pm – Xiaobo Waist Drum Dance Group Performance
    Enjoy a high-energy cultural showcase featuring:

    • Drum Dance: Delightful with Great Joy – Pittsburgh Xiaobo Waist Drum Dance Group
    • Chinese Zither Ensemble – Wendy
    • Erhu (two-stringed instrument) – Ryan Yu
    • Indian Dance – Shivani’s Group
    • Tai Chi Demo – Dr. Alex Cao
    • Pipa (Chinese stringed instrument) – Chengxi Tao
    • Violin Ensemble – Jack Xu & Friends
    • Audience Dance: Little Apple – Streamers dance with Pittsburgh Xiaobo Waist Drum Dance Group
