The Westmoreland Offers Free Art Making Kits during Community Art Week

Community Art Week will occur Wednesday, May 19 through Sunday, May 23

GREENSBURG, Pennsylvania (May 12, 2021) – The Westmoreland Museum of American Art is thrilled to offer free art making kits to the community during Community Art Week. Individuals from the community can pick up free art making kits, located in plastic bins outside the Museum’s main entrance, between 10am-5pm starting on Wednesday, May 19 through Sunday, May 23. A limited amount of kits will be available each day.

The art making kits consist of Mosaic Glass To-Go Kits developed by the Pittsburgh Glass Center and Shadowbox Art Kits created by Pittsburgh Center for Creative Reuse, whom the Museum partnered with for this engaging art making opportunity. Kits are geared towards adults, teens and children, although small children may require assistance from an adult.

Each kit includes step-by-step instructions and the supplies required for individuals to complete their own mosaics or shadowboxes.* Participants can choose from 5 different basic mosaic shapes or a surprise shadowbox art activity consisting of various materials. To help participants complete their mosaics or shadowboxes, video tutorials are also available on the Museum’s website at: thewestmoreland.org/event/community-art-week/.

Participants are also encouraged to share their mosaic glass art or shadowbox art with the Museum via social media by sharing a picture of their work in progress or finished piece, using the hashtag #CommunityArtWeek and tagging the Museum on Facebook: @TheWestmoreland, Twitter: @TheWestmoreland, or on Instagram: @WestmorelandMuseum.

“Since the Museum has not been able to offer our free monthly in-person Community Days, where we typically presented a variety of art making activities, we wanted to engage with our community by offering free art making kits that they could do at home while still feeling connected to the Museum. *Some additional basic supplies like craft glue, scissors, markers, and paint may be required to complete the Shadowbox Art Kits.
