GREENSBURG, PA, Thursday, June 1, 2017 — On Saturday, June 10, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Ligonier Valley Writers will partner with The Westmoreland Museum of American Art to explore selected pieces of art and write about them. A museum educator will introduce artworks, point out key elements, and pose questions to help participants feel at home in the art. Then writing coaches will help writers choose a genre, suggest ways to get started, answer questions, and help polish their finished story, essay, or poem. Participants will get a chance to share their writing with the group. Coffee and pastries will be served mid-morning.
Register to participate by June 6. To register, visit $20 for LVW and Museum members, $25 for nonmembers. The public is welcome. The Westmoreland is located at 221 N. Main St. in Greensburg, PA 15601.
Joan McGarry, The Westmoreland’s Director of Education & Visitor Engagement, says, “The Westmoreland is very excited to be working with Ligonier Valley Writers to bring people together to find inspiration for their writing through the Museum’s collection.”
After the workshop, participants are invited to stay for a gallery talk by artist Tim Prentice from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. about the inspirational role of the work of Alexander Calder and George Rickey on his own art. He will share the stories behind many of his mobiles featured in The Art of Movement.
The Westmoreland is a regional museum with a national presence. Built to inspire and engage, it captures our region’s rich agrarian and industrial past by placing local history within the greater context of our nation. The collection includes works by major artists from four centuries. It’s home to more than 3,400 objects of fine and decorative American art, including a newest collection of post-1950 artwork, and every work of art has a story to tell.
Ligonier Valley Writers is an all-volunteer nonprofit group serving writers and readers throughout western Pennsylvania. About The Westmoreland Museum of American Art
The Westmoreland Museum of American Art, located at 221 N. Main Street in Greensburg, PA, completed a transformational renovation and expansion project in October 2015. A new LEED-certified addition of over 13,000 square feet features a dynamic cantilevered design along with a stunning view of the City of Greensburg and the Laurel Highlands beyond. The Westmoreland’s permanent collection is comprised of works by major American artists from the 18th century through the present, with a special emphasis on Southwestern Pennsylvania art and artists. The Museum also offers an impressive schedule of temporary exhibitions of American art – both nationally-travelling and those organized in house – as well as events and community-oriented educational programming for all ages.
